What is OSGi?
OSGi is a standardized dynamic module platform for Java™ that adds well-defined layers of functionality on top of the Java™ runtime. The mature OSGi platform is backed by IBM, BEA, Oracle, Nokia and many other companies, as the key technology to enable the promise of components and modular systems. The most well-known OSGi-based product is Eclipse and its many derivatives such as Websphere Studio.
Modularity Concept
OSGi software is packaged in modules, so called bundles. These allow software engineers to assemble applications from large sets of re-usable bundles, greatly reducing the amount of in-house application development. It is possible to add, remove and upgrade the bundles while the application is running, setting the stage for true 24/7 systems.
